Duel Guide By Nebby (a.k.a. “Llamaz”), visit warsow.net.au forums
Introduction The purpose of this writing is to be a complete and concise guide to the gametype duel. I will attempt to put to paper all that I have learned concerning this gametype. This guide assumes that you already have some experience with warsow and are familiar with its basics.
I would like to emphasize the fact that knowledge is not power. Knowledge and 1000 repetitions is power. After reading and comprehending this guide, you are not expected to start winning every game, but you are expected to understand how to win every game. You will only get better with practice, and there are no “secrets? such as config, sensitivity, mouse, etc. You get out what you put in.
Overview
Duel is completely and utterly based upon armors and the megahealth. Armors and the megahealth are of great importance. When you do not have any armor, you are basically naked. Only a few shots will kill you. Get into the habit of feeling extremely vulnerable when you don’t have any armor.
There are three armors: the Red, yellow, and green (In order of protection, and thus importance). Since you are naked when you don’t have any armor, and more importantly your enemy is naked when he doesn’t have any armor, you would want to get the armor, while your enemy has none. So how do we manage to do this? The answer brings us to our next section; control.
Control
The armors spawn every 25 seconds, and the megahealth 20 seconds after it is used up (players health goes below 100). The goal of duel is to control as many of these items as possible, for as long as possible, so as to emasculate our opponent, so he is easier to kill.
When armor spawns, one must looks at the clock, minus 25 seconds (forget the minutes, focus just on the seconds), to get the time when it will spawn again, and when it does spawn; rinse and repeat. This is called controlling armor.
Try to control both armors, and the megahealth (in which you minus 20 seconds instead of 20 when your health drops below 100), and in the time between when you first take it, and the time it takes for these items to spawn again, is the time when you must hunt down your opponent.
So how do you get back in control, if your enemy is depriving you of most armor? Usually, it’s best to run away, and build up on weaker armor, while doing a little damage to your opponent, while not taking any yourself, but if you desperately need to get a kill, this may not be the best option.
When I first started dueling, I had difficulty with timing the armor, but after a few weeks afterwards, I found a method that suited me, but may not suit you. It involves memorizing what -25 is of the multiples of 5 (5, 10, 15, etc) up to 60. So 15 would be 50 (15 – 25 = 50, on the clock). If you took armor at 17, you would know that 17 = 15 + 2, so since if I picked up the armor at 15 it would spawn at 50, 50 + 2 = 52; so 17 = 52.
Some time ago, a guy named “fyn? started playing warsow, and I had played quite a bit before he did. His aim was worse than mine. His movement was worse than mine. All he could do well was time. He still beat me, at duel. This is what encouraged me to start timing.
For a good example of control, one can watch this demo: http://www.challenge-tv.com/index.php?m … 8&dl=3 (spec lo)
Positioning
Most newcomers have no idea this even exists. It basically means, using cover, and being in a better area to damage your opponent than he is. Using cover, moving out of a wall to shoot, then quickly moving back into the wall prevents your opponent from easily damaging you. Having higher ground makes it easier for you to aim with a rocket launcher, while harder for your opponent.
Aim
What is aim? Aim is muscle memory. Muscle memory develops the more correct shots you make. Talking is a form of muscle memory, and so is writing. Aim is only partially hand eye coordination. For an in depth explanation, follow this link: http://counterstrikesourcetactics.blogs … emory.html
I’m not going to go in depth on weapon selection, because there are other guides for that, and I’m lazy. But what I am going to say is don’t rush your shots!!! My aim improved so much when I stopped, and aim at the knees for the RL, more of a chance of a direct hit, and if you don’t get a direct hit, it will go past your opponent and inflict splash damage. For the LG, try to lead your shots, aim at the sides, not the middle, on the side you think your opponent will go. This encourages prediction.
People ask a lot of questions about sensitivity, and what everyone uses. Firstly, if I have 1 sensitivity, and you have more sensitivity, I have more sensitivity than you. Why? Because of my mouse; it has more dpi, which means dots per inch, and is like another sensitivity control, and windows sensitivity also must be taken into account.
Other
There are other aspects to duel, which I am going to explain in one section, because they are all easily explained in 1-2 sentences:
• Spawn Raping
Learn all of the spawns on a map (/kill in console repeatedly). When you get a kill, listen where your opponent spawns, and know where the best place to go (on wdm5 the bridge is the best location because everything is easily accessible.
• Don’t Hug Walls
Don’t stay close to walls, its easy to hit someone when they’re next to a wall.
• First 15 seconds
In the first 15 seconds, try to get an RL because it’s the most stable weapon, and if not an RL, get an LG. On the 44th second all the items spawn. Be ready. On wdm5, for example, one player goes for the RA and the other for the YA + MH (or GA + YA + MH, if you want to risk the YA getting taken).
• Know when to take risks
For example, at the first 15 seconds, on wdm5, you know your opponent is going for the MH and YA, you can fire off a few shots, before going back to the RA.
• Lower your opponents armor/hp while increasing your own
This may sound very obvious, but just keep in mind that you can get a few shots on your opponent while he’s taking armor. On wdm5, you can attack an opponent going for the RA from the top with an RL or GL, and then go for the YA, if it’s going to spawn soon.
• Read your opponents mind
Try to predict what your opponent needs, and where he’ll be. If he is low on health, you can cut him off at a health bubble (such as the 2 contiguous 25 healths on the bridge on wdm5). Duel is all about mind games.
