Description
Hey there, long time no map review, i'm sorry for that, but I had not a lot of time. Anyways, we are coming back with a new map review, this time it's ws-aztech from the new mapper Torefos. Let's take a look into it!
Well, what to say about the gameplay, it's ws-aztech ;) The author did a good job and ported the layout of the famous counterstrike map in a good and simple way to warsow, he found out the most important parts of the map. I am surprised how well the layout works in wsw, there is a great switch between open areas and tight hallways. The map is designed to be played at instagib deathmatch so you won't find any items, although I think that it could work in ca good too. But besides the good conversion there are other significant problems. At first the author forgot to implement wsw movement, the layout is well, but I'm missing ramps and some tricks heavily! E.g. a ramp to get up onto the wooden bridge would have been nice, and one to get up to the big hallway with the many arches. Also the map is really quite open and empy in some parts, mainly at the main area and at the side part with the long stairs. These areas could have been filled with crates or any other things like rocks, just to make it more closed. And now comes the biggest problem of the map: missing clipping. You are able to jump onto the roofs of the rooms, even without any weapon tricks. That completely brakes the map as soon as anyone abuses this. The performance was well, the tris max value I counted was sth. like 1400 and I didn't recognize any heavier slowdowns, although the author made some mistakes like unnecessary textures in certain parts, missing hint portals and stuff. With more gameplay tweaks this map could have been a really good idm map, now it is just too easy to break the map due to the missing clipping, but I guess that the map could work on idm servers.
While the original cs map is more bright this map follows a more dark style, which mostly is created with the skybox, poor lighting and many dark textures. The brushwork is adequate, but misses many details. The arches are well made and the rocks are bevelled. There are also some crates lying around. The map misses more curves and small details, like lamps, more bevelled brushes and more curves, also some nice skybox would have been good, like the maya pyramids in the original. The texture choice was quite good, the map surprises with a nice diversification, you will find rocks, bricks, grass, metal, wood and even some ivy (some are from a texture pack by simonoc if I don't be mistaken now). Most of the textures are well fitted, like the crates, although the wsw symbols are most of the time mirrored. Like already said the textures create a more dim ambience which works quite well. The lighting is quite sparse, the map is mainly lit by ambient light, only the main hallway is lit a bit better. The author could have done much more here, like some decent placed lamps which would have increased the dim ambience of the map even further. Although proper lighting is mostly missing, the skybox emits a small blue shine which looks great in some parts like at the bridge, also it punctuates the textures very smooth.
While the maps design looks quite different from the original, the author did a good job with interpreting it in his own way. There is a lot of detail missing but the good texture choice compensates that a bit.
Results
ws-aztech is a nice new map which could make some decent fun on idm, for sure as long as no one finds out about the possibility to get onto the roofs. It is a pretty nice conversion which lacks at more love for the detail. Whatever, I bet that the map is some good fun to play with the right amount of players and I hope to see more maps by this author in the future :)
