Description


Today I will review a ca map made by cr!zis. Most of the community should know cr!zis from his instagib servers and his website (http://www.warsow-insta.net)
or have heard that he became a member of the Warsow developer team and that his map smooth fun got included into the latest Warsow 0.5 test build.
I am reviewing this specific map because of a suggestion from lokirulez. Well, let’s start.

The map layout aims for the clanarena gametype, but the author also placed some items to make it playable in other gametypes too (wtf why is there a flag?). He suggested to play this map from 2vs2 up to 4vs4 players, maybe a 5vs5 could work too. The layout seems to pretty inspired by wca1, especially the horizontal bars at the top stage. The connectivity is good, the map is divided into specific rooms which are connected via different entrances. The flow feels adequate although there are some nasty edges which could stop you quite ease. Unfortunately I’m missing some ramps, for the most parts you need to stop and rj upwards which stops the flow a bit. The map is also pretty open but this gets a bit defused by the sometimes small entrances. The most fights will happen at the middle room, which is the most open one and which allows a fast way to nearly each stage of the map. The top stage, where the ya is, could be a problem as you see nearly the whole map from up there. The map contains three jumppads which allow a pretty fast way upwards, they will get used quite often. The idea with the curved block in the room with the horizontal bars is a nice idea, but not pretty playable as it stops you quite often when you jump at the curved part, a small ramp would have been better there. Two areas of the map are pretty senseless too, as they don’t give you any advantage from staying at them. Camper classes will have the easiest way in this map. What I heavily miss are locations, that’s a big NoNo for each ca map as you can’t orientate at the items. Bots aren’t included. The performance is okay, the r_speeds values were very good. Only in some places I got fps drops of 70 and some lags, it could work better but it’s enough for playing.

The design also orientates on wca1 and wca2. It contains a lot of curves and some really sweet details. You will meet small brushes with light sources on them, many bars, brushed Warsow symbols and a load of curves. The curves are in a good looking angle and sometimes the map reminds to a cathedral, especially the outer walls. Some parts contain pretty good brushwork like the stairs in the middle way or that the bars are not completely vertical, but in some parts there could be even a bit more detail. The mapper truly has a good brushwork skill, there’s not pretty much to complain about. The textures are from Hazel Whorleys Warsow texture set, which is also used by wca1 and wca2. There are some custom glass textures which are downloaded from any website, the environment shader is a bit too bright and the glass to clean. The textures are placed good, each texture seems to fit exactly in its place. They are pretty dark which gives the map a bit wca2 style. But some textures are used quite too often, there’s nearly no variety in it, e.g. you ever see the same wall. I also miss deluxe mapping, it would give the map an even darker style. One of the Warsow posters is mirrored, also all posters miss a wall behind them which allows people to see through them. There is not much to complain about the lightning, nearly each light obtains a valid source and the turquoise and orange lights add some variety. Only the middle area would need more lights. All these parts create an intense mood and give the map an individual style.

Results


Cr!zis has shown that he has the skill to make decent maps. The design is good and the gameplay is better than many other ca maps.
If you are bored of wca1 I suggest you to try this map instead, it maybe doesn’t play that good and has a bit slow flow, nethertheless it’s worth a download.
But be warned, if you hate wca1 because it’s a very open map, you won’t be pretty happy with this one too.
All in all a good custom map which will hopefully be played more often in the future. Over and out.

Yeah, Hi at first :)
I played this map allready and have to post my comment. How Solidfake nicly discriped the movement flow is stopped often because of the small rooms and hard edges. But for a 2on2 it's really playable because you can find your enemy pretty fast, and there are many opportunities to attack the other team.
In my opinion grunt is the best class for this map, because the roads and ways are pretty small so you can hit the enemy pretty easy.
All in all it's a really nice map for playing small fun matches but nothing for serious tournaments.

(I sayd nothing about the design, because I play with lowest graphic settings^^)
